About Dennis Mascall Scholarship Award

A scholarship has been set up in Dennis’s name to reflect his passion for a vibrant future and reward outstanding achievements. Dennis’s hope is to expand these Scholarships to other qualified colleges across Canada.

When asked his secret to his enduring career, Dennis says, A long active life depends upon staying open to new things. I am interested in offering support and my knowledge to young people and of course coming up with new initiatives, guiding IDRC to the benefit of a growing membership. We must always stay relevant.

I will always carry you in my heart, you will forever be my confidant in my thoughts, and I will never stop thanking you.

I feel so lucky we crossed paths at that trade show in Birmingham, UK. Our shared love for jazz, decor design, and especially wall fashion sparked a conversation that grew into an incredible 24-year career with friendship.

Working under your leadership, I was immersed in all of the administrative duties, but you also let me bring my creative side with feature booths at IIDEX and IDS, countless Ask a Decorator® at the Home & Garden show, FAB plus Seminars … so many great memories! One show we worked on during my birthday, and you showed up with an incredible bouquet – you were the best boss!

You became a part of my young family — babysitting, joining us on holidays, helping boys with after-school programs, and even refereeing their football team. When my father passed, you stepped into their lives as Uncle Dennis.

Thank you for your wisdom and sharp British wit and for always being kind, tolerant, and generous. You are a real Gentleman to me! RIP my dear friend.

I have known Dennis for so long that I can’t even remember when we met. But he was always an amazing ambassador for the decorating industry and will be missed. Our students are so lucky to have had such a great champion of their education.

Dad, thank you, I am truly blessed.
You have made my life so much fun……..,, Some of my earliest recollections -being “on delivery” with you….cans of paint in the trunk ! And meeting your customer George Shoesmith, a legend in Hamilton that spoke to me in Donald Duck !
My first summer job was at Selectone putting together fliers for shops to promote “pot ‘o’paint” that in 1974 , aged 14, I thought was the “grooviest” thing ever
And So many happy shows !
I especially loved riding the scooters around during set up and knock down ! But….You always found a fun task for me to assist with…. Giving out flowers or demonstrating some thing or another !
You taught me the value of hard work and appreciation of people.
I discovered my love of colour & design , business & marketing , culture & travel all from you. You showed me how to believe in myself , trust my instincts and appreciate others. What an honour it has been to care for you recently. And now I teach and have the honor of carrying on your legacy, so again I say,
    Dad ❤️Thank you.
    I am truly blessed

So sad to hear of Dennis’ passing but gratified that he led such a full and productive life! I met him 20 years ago at a seminar and he kindly invited me to join IDRC. I have very fond memories of Dennis. Please let me know when the celebration of his life will be. Condolences to his loved ones and those who worked with himB

I first met Dennis in the mid 80’s when visiting Select Wallcoverings in Toronto as a young representative from Mayfair walcoverings in the UK. I was nervous about meeting the company owner but he was immediately friendly, supportive and offered constructive comments about the new collection I had brought out to show him. We also discovered we had a shared birthplace (Southend on Sea). Dennis was a genuinely lovely man – commercially astute and passionate about the industry and people in it but also someone with a tremendous sense of fun. He was a great person to spend time with and learn from and was always generous with his time. Someone who genuinely made a positive impact throughout his long life. Condolences to Denise and the rest of Dennis’s family.

Heaven got an amazing gift on Sunday Nov 24 2024 by the name of Dennis MascAll .

I knew him for over 30 years, and believe me he is one of the great ones. Always giving, always loving, always fair. A great business head, always coming up with great ideas/ great plans. I had never met a businessman like him, so fair, so negiotable and understanding of a person’s value. Most businessman I came across over the years were all about themselves. Not Dennis!mmmmI enjoyed collaborating with him for the WWFA ‘S Off The Wall fashion show! He understood that there’s no “I “ in team, unfortunately as a stubborn artist I still needed to learn that. LOL He was very patient, calm and understanding with me and just let me shine!!!!!

We became very close in his latter years as he was living and renting space in my house! He was like an uncle to me or as he would like to call it “my big brother”. He was my mentor, my advisor, or as he would say” friendly Esso man” my problem solver, my friend and my confidant.
Dennis always saw great potential in people and knew how to help them to bring their talents to life.

He always believed in me and some of my biggest successes were because of him, like being on HGTV, Magazines, newspaper- he was the root / the foundation, bringing my interior design talents to light!

I miss coming home at the end of the day and sharing the adventures of the day! I miss driving around and listening to jazz music or 40s Junction music together.
I miss our Saturday breakfast diner excursions watching soccer, our occasional Friday night family dinners together, or searching for the best fish and chips in town!
I miss going to High park in the summer to WATCH the runners in the park while gorging down our meal. Eating, That was our work out. LOL!
I have fond memories of outings with Dennis, my Mom and his daughter Denise and her husband came to visit from wherever she was living around the world.
My mother also thought of Dennis as an eloquent , well mannered gentle man.
She is right, I never saw him raise a finger! He always remained calm and gentle in every situation and in every negotiation.

But, like all people he had his “Achilles heel” he couldn’t resist the pretty ladies. Especially beautiful, bossy ones he was like putty in their hands! That’s maybe where his negotiation skills got the best of him! Giving to a fault!!! Ha, ha, ha,

He and his buddy tibor, in their 80’s (age not years) would go clubbing and pick up ladies named icy and Bambi at their age! Kudos to them! We had a good laugh talking about it after wards. I wonder if Tibor and him are still partying in heaven!

I CAN only aspire to be that spunky when I reach that age!

I could have lived with Dennis forever!
Dennis enriched my life so much in so many ways. it was sad that it had to end, but I knew it was time for him to be with his daughter in Spain to enjoy his golden years.

No other tenant I had was as kind, thoughtful or colourful in a good way as he is.
Dennis I miss our laughs, good times, and kindred spirited-ship! No one holds a candle!

I wish I only could have said “see you later”!

Give my Mom a big hug for me will you!❤️

He gave back so much to the design community and it was a pleasure to work with him for many years. He will be missed.
